The Ferris State Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) aims to provide cadets with the necessary leadership skills and confidence to excel in their follow on training as Second Lieutenants. The skills we help develop will not only help the cadets in their military lives but also their other classes and future civilian jobs. Cadets will use the confidence and resiliency that we teach them to become leaders in their fields and prepare them to strive to be all they can be.
Students will enroll normally at Ferris State and into their selected degree field. They sign up for classes like the regular students and follow the same path to graduation. However, if they would like to become a contracted cadet or to obtain the Military Science and Leadership Minor, they have to enroll into our class each semester. That means one class, one PT session, and one lab a week each semester. Contracted cadets have to attend Physical Training (PT) Tuesday through Thursday and those hoping to obtain their minor need to attend at least one day of PT. Aspiring cadets can take the class service obligation-free if they decide not to contract in the spring of their sophomore year.
If class or varsity sport conflicts arise, we have worked with students in the past to ensure they can stay in the program if they so choose. Cadets are expected to make room for the Military Science class when possible, but that is not always an obtainable goal for every major. If a scheduling conflict occurs, be sure to contact an ROTC cadre member and your advisor to see if an exception can be made.
