All-Gender Restrooms

All-Gender Restrooms

Everyone deserves to feel comfortable using the bathroom. But for many in our community, when the only available options are gender-specific, it can turn a routine trip to the restroom into a daunting challenge.

That's why, as a college and a community that strives to create inclusive and equitable spaces where everyone feels supported, Ferris and KCAD has designated specific restrooms on campus for use by all genders.

What Is An All-Gender Restroom?

An all-gender restroom simply refers to a restroom in which people of any and all gender expressions are welcome, including people who identify as transgender or nonbinary.

All-gender restrooms also give caregivers or helpers for people with disabilities—who may need to assist someone of a different gender—a comfortable place to do so, and they can serve parents accompanying their young child to the restroom in the same way.

Why Are All-Gender Restrooms Important?

Many people experience difficulty when required to use gender-specific restrooms. Especially for transgender and/or gender non-conforming people, the use of public restrooms can lead to harassment, deep discomfort, or even physical violence.

All-gender restrooms offer an inclusive and accessible alternative that, when paired with gender-specific restrooms, helps make sure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
