College graduates should be able to produce effective written communication demonstrating
appropriate use of language, sentence structure, grammar, and mechanics; specifically,
they should be able to:
- avoid common grammatical errors of standard written English
- quote accurately
- consider audience and purpose to shape their voice, choose a voice to write in, and
choose language, sentence structure, and content to create that voice
- vary sentence length and style for rhetorical purposes
- use active or passive voice where appropriate
- use language their audience understands
- define or explain technical terms
- use concise language
- use correct grammar, syntax (word order), punctuation, and spelling
- use correct reference form
- use visual aids, tables, and graphs appropriately
- use the specific language conventions of their academic discipline or professional
area.
