As a referral-based practice it is typically a tougher environment for students than a standard private practice. The patients are being referred by another professional (OD, MD, PA, Pediatrician, etc), so the learning curve for students is always evident when starting. It’s always fun to see their critical thinking skills progress throughout the externship. Diligent students learn a tremendous amount about how to provide disciplined patient care at a high level. The progression of clinical objectives are as follows:
- Complete accurate EHR documentation/charting
- Learn how to maximize workflow for a multi-doctor which utilizes extensive ancillary equipment (OCT, VF, Fundus photos, topography, etc.)
- Become competent in patient education
- Understand how to build a referral network of healthcare professionals to determine where to send patients who require additional testing including MRIs, blood work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.
- Exposure to complicated examinations with patients who often have advanced ocular and/or systemic disease with multiple conditions/complications. Learning how to manage the entire patient in order to provide the highest quality of care possible.
It is the responsibility of the intern to find housing. Average apartment cost is $800-$1500/month.
