Student teams faced a complex, real-world scenario that simulated a vertical construction project in a dense urban environment where logistics and coordination were critical.
The annual competition attracts the nation’s top construction management and engineering students and connects them with leading national companies that are hiring the next generation of leaders.
The challenge asked student teams to demonstrate a working understanding of job costs, planned vs. actual scheduling, time and material tracking, and billing. They also had to draft formal request for information submissions, review product submittal data, negotiate change orders, and review project schedule delays and impacts.
“Ferris State’s Construction Technology and Management Electrical Team has consistently proven its excellence in this prestigious competition, securing first, second, and third place finishes over the first three years they’ve participated in the competition,” said professor Mark Dyke of the School of Built Environment in Ferris State’s College of Engineering Technology. “Bulldogs continue to shine on the national stage because we prepare students to tackle real-world challenges with confidence and skill.”
Ferris State’s team included Jordan Lambiris, Daniel Weller, Zack Borton, Nathan Geiger, Nathan Diephouse, and Katie Hahn with professor Brian Bejeck, the coach.
Ferris State was topped only by Texas A&M University. Challengers included Arizona State University, Auburn University, Boise State University, California State Polytechnic University – Pomona and SLO, California State East Bay, California State Sacramento, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Oregon State University, San Diego State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and University of Wyoming.
The four-day event, held recently at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nevada, was attended by nearly 1,800 students and 85 faculty coaches representing 57 universities from 21 states.
Student teams participated in a wide range of competitions, including Integrated Projects, Virtual Design and Construction, Sustainable Building, Preconstruction, and Project Management.
ASC’s corresponding Construction Management Conference attracted 170 companies, featured presentations about technology and innovation, a job fair with 116 companies, and meet-and-greet events.
The Construction Technology and Management Electrical Team’s success follows the dominance from the Design Build Team, which has taken first place the last six years at the Associated Schools of Construction Region 3 student competition held in Downers grove, Illinois each fall.
