Ferris State announces enrollment increase from January2024 to January 2025
Ferris State University has announced an increase of 2.8 percent in its enrollment figures for January 2025 compared to January 2024.
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. —

Ferris State University’s winter semester enrollment increased by 2.8 percent over the prior year, preparing more students with a quality education leading to rewarding careers and a memorable college experience.

The annual winter count day tally indicated there were 9,951 students enrolled, a 271-student increase. It’s the first winter enrollment increase since 2015, and the largest since 2011.

Jeanine Ward-Roof, Ferris State’s vice president for Student Affairs, said she was excited to see an increase in first-time students and gains among African American students.

“It’s a thrilling time to be part of Ferris State, and our remarkable enrollment growth is proof of that,” she said. “Our programs are designed to ignite passions and deliver dynamic, hands-on experiences that pave the way to thriving careers in a wide range of industries. But what truly sets us apart is our people—the dedicated individuals who foster a welcoming, supportive environment where students of all ages feel empowered and encouraged to succeed at every step of their journey.”

The winter semester increase follows a fall 2024 semester increase of 41 students, also a first since 2015.

Enrollment of African American students increased by 86 students, a 10.5 percent boost, following an increase of 95 students in the fall.

Enrollment in the university’s College of Health Professions, rose by 6.4 percent, and the University College – Ferris State’s multidisciplinary college -- jumped by 13.9 percent. Ferris State’s Kendall College of Art and Design increased by 10.5 percent.

Ward-Roof said students are attracted by Ferris State’s small class sizes and specialized programs that are supported by industry partnerships to ensure students are gaining relevant skills.

The university boasts Michigan’s only College of Optometry, a leading College of Pharmacy, the largest arts and design program among state universities at the Kendall College of Art and Design. The PGA Golf Management program was the first in the nation, and its Master of Information and Intelligence program ranks among the nation’s elite.

A vibrant, welcoming campus scene includes more than 220 clubs and organizations and nationally ranked athletics programs – including the recently crowned NCAA DII National Champion football team.

The Big Rapids campus in West Michigan is perfect for students who enjoy four seasons of outdoors activities.

The university also is expanding support services for students to help them be successful. Last year Ferris State announced a partnership with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services to provide increased mental wellness support and cut the ribbon on the Bulldog Pantry to assist students challenged by food insecurity.
