Ferris State Digital Media Software Engineering online curriculum rises to fourth among nation’s top 15 by University HQ

Ferris State University’s Digital Media Software Engineering program once again ranks prominently among the nation’s best, according to University HQ, an independent education organization.
The Ferris State program, based in the School of Digital Media, has ranked among the top 15 online bachelor’s degree programs for three consecutive years, climbing from fifth to fourth in the rankings. The Digital Media Software program ranked sixth in 2023, fifth in 2024, and fourth in 2025. The rankings are available here.
“The software engineering program at Ferris is a highly focused engineering program with the core outcomes focusing on implementing software application from inception to deployment,” said Mohamed Abusharkh, an assistant professor of Digital Media Software Engineering at Ferris State.
“Students take their knowledge to the next level from ‘just making the code work’ to high-level engineering methodologies covering application performance, efficiency, everyday tools used in industry and cutting-edge technology in the areas of artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles (self-driving cars) and more,” he said.
Ferris State students benefit from quality academic opportunities before graduation and enjoy strong job prospects after earning their degrees.
“Our program has a 100-percent internship placement rate. On a state and national level, software engineers are highly in demand,” Abusharkh said. “Some studies list more software engineering jobs in the country than actual software engineers.”
The 2023 median salary for software developers is more than $130,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“Our graduates work in various fields, including the health sector, finance, manufacturing, and media and game development,” Abusharkh said.
The Ferris State Digital Media Software Engineering program helps students master software development fundamentals while gaining insights into emerging technologies, giving them relevant abilities in a high-demand field.
The program, which has been available online since 2019 after establishing this degree track at the Ferris State Grand Rapids campus, offers courses during the fall, spring, and summer semesters to allow for degree completion in four years.
