Ferris State providing housing, support services to students displaced by power outage
Ferris State University is continuing to support several hundred students who will be in temporary housing through the weekend as crews repair power lines damaged during Wednesday’s storms.
Members of Ferris State’s Housing and Residence Life and Office of Student Life teams worked through Thursday night and early Friday morning to help about 500 students in Cramer and Bond halls find temporary locations in other residence halls, with friends, or at area hotels.
On Friday, Housing and Residence Life helped about 400 students living in the West Campus Apartments, offering temporary housing or credits to their student accounts if they remain in their units or stay with friends or family.
The university’s Facilities Department is working with Muskegon-based Newkirk Electric to repair and replace power lines damaged as a result of the severe weather. The contractor is securing the materials needed and plans to begin the work quickly. Barring setbacks, the power could be restored by Monday afternoon.
The university is ensuring the relocated students continue to have access to campus and support services. A shuttle bus is scheduled to make rounds between campus and hotels throughout the weekend, with stops at The Rock Café, the Student Recreation Center, the David Eisler Center, and FLITE, the campus’ library.
Affected students who do not have meal plans will be able to dine without charge at the university’s Rock Café and Quad Cafe until the power is restored.
Campus leaders also extended the hours at the David Eisler Center and Campus Recreation Center, with both facilities remaining open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
In-person and online classes are scheduled to continue as planned on Monday. Faculty members are empathetic to the challenges students are facing and will be as flexible as possible during this unprecedented time. Students who have questions are encouraged to reach out to their professors directly.
