Ferris State’s Daisy Mendez returns home to complete her degree with a marketing internship at the Community Foundation for Oceana County

Going “home” after graduating from Ferris State University meant Shelby native Daisy
Mendez can add to her skills by helping market a foundation that helped her start
her educational journey.
Mendez is starting her internship with the Community Foundation for Oceana County
in a role that aligns with her Bachelor of Science in Marketing curriculum.
“This is a very good growing opportunity for me and a chance to learn and execute
some important marketing concepts while I complete the last requirement for my degree,”
she said. “Though I have great interest in a career in the social media industry,
I would be very happy to build toward that goal by joining a nonprofit in communications.
So, this internship is important for me.”
Mendez minored in Public Relations. Through her internship, she is tasked with helping
the Community Foundation with its website redesign, supporting its summer event schedule,
managing its social media messaging and creating content.
Mendez said the foundation helped her get to where she is now, earning a scholarship after graduating from Shelby High School.
“That was a really significant component as I began at Ferris State,” she said. “It
is nice to be home again and planning my future, after graduation and this internship.”
Prospects are strong for Mendez and other marketing and advertising professionals
in the next several years.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said demand for such talent will outpace the average for all occupations, projecting a 10 percent increase from 2022 to 2029. ZipRecruiter.com tabs the average final pay for today’s marketing specialists at just over $61,000 annually.
