Nick also attended the TDMP program at Ferris for his undergrad where he also received a minor in Theatrical Arts and worked on nearly a dozen plays either behind the scenes or on stage. Kuiper also earned his Master of Arts from Central Michigan University's Broadcast and Cinematic Arts program where he served as a graduate assistant at News Central 34. This position included executive producing the daily, hour-long news broadcast. His research focused on self-censorship in the media after the advent of television ratings and he focused on the Electronic Media Production concentration.
Kuiper has over 5 years of award-winning experience working in broadcast news. The first 2 years of his career were spent working for the highest rated television station in Northern Michigan as a photojournalist. As a "phojo," Nick covered dozens of breaking news events, interviewed many politicians and celebrities and won awards for his visual work in electronic news gathering.
Nick spent the next year as Senior News Producer at 9 and 10 News/Fox 33 where he produced the 7 and 10 pm newscasts and eventually the 6 and 11pm broadcasts. Kuiper continued in this role as a freelance senior news producer for additional two years until leaving and starting a position as Adjunct at Ferris State University. Eventually Kuiper was promoted to Associate Professor where he continues preparing students in TDMP for successful careers in the media production industry.
Nick is also an avid filmmaker who has received national distribution for his work. He currently works on personal projects as a Director, Director of Photography, Editor and Motion Graphics. He recently completed an hour-long film called "A New Normal" which focuses on the first 18 months of the pandemic through the stories of students, staff, faculty, and administrators at Ferris State University. The film will tentatively be distributed through NETA starting in Winter of 2021.
