The Omega Psi Phi Endowed Scholarship was established in 2022 by the alumni of Ferris State’s Phi Zeta Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is a professional organization of college-educated men with similar ideas and attainments. It is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “Friendship is essential to the soul,” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived, and that phrase was selected as the fraternity’s motto. The fraternity’s founders, Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, Frank Coleman, and faculty adviser Ernest Everett Just, chose Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift as the organization’s cardinal principles. Many notable Omega Men are recognized as leaders in the arts, sciences, academics, athletics, business, civil rights, education, and government at the local, national and international levels. Since the organization’s birth in 1911, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity continues to leverage its power, influence and more than 100 years of commitment to uplift its people and communities.
