An artist and director of the Golden Apple Art Residency, in Maine, will speak about
her series of 12 oil-on-canvas works titled “An Army of Women,” as Mount Pleasant-based
Shelley Newman Stevens will participate in a talk and reception at the Ferris State
University Fine Art Gallery, Thursday, March 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Stevens, who operates the Golden Apple Studio in Mount Pleasant, said that she is proud to offer this exhibit of her work, which debuted Friday, March 1 in the gallery, which is located in University Center, Room 205. The collection will remain available for students, faculty, staff and members of the community through Saturday, April 6.
“These portraits should not be considered as objects to be viewed, but to be taken in as a subject of conversation,” Stevens said. “My intention is to offer a different perspective on female portraiture.”
Stevens’ exhibit is hosted and sponsored by the Fine Art Gallery, in collaboration with the university’s Office of Multicultural Student Services, during the 2019 celebration of Women’s History Month.
“I intended these images to reflect the full measure of a woman’s value in various attributes, as this series was developed over the course of a couple of years,” Stevens said. “I very much hope visitors who see this exhibit give consideration to those women who are in a mature stage of life, with the beauty and character that those subjects exude.”
“We are very pleased and excited to offer Stevens’ works and to welcome Shelly on March 7,” Fine Art Gallery Director Carrie Weis said. “We also appreciate the promotional support from Ferris' Museum of Sexist Objects and the OMSS, during Women’s History Month.”
The gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,
and it is closed on Sundays. Anyone requiring assistance to attend the March 7 event,
or to visit the Fine Art Gallery are encouraged to call the Fine Art Gallery at (231)
591-2536, or to contact Weis by email.
