Emily and Jon ColesJon and Emily Coles share their story of giving to the Ferris Futures Scholarship Challenge

Creating a New Legacy of Scholarship Support for Students

You know firsthand how a Ferris education provides opportunity for success. But students cannot take advantage of the opportunities Ferris provides if they are not able to afford it. We have been working diligently at Ferris to develop practical solutions for current and future students so they too can have an opportunity for success – and so have our alumni.

Michigan College of Optometry alumna Dr. Emily Coles (’08) and her husband, Ferris’ Associate Athletic Director Jon, recently established The Coles Family Scholarship Endowment through the Ferris Futures Scholarship Challenge. This initiative matches gifts to new and existing endowments dollar-for-dollar, allowing donors to name new endowments to a specific college, academic or athletic program of choice with gifts of $12,500 or more through 2022.

The Coles shared their story of why they decided to give back to Ferris at the public launch of the University’s first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, “Now & Always” last November. Their story was powerful, and I would like to share some of Emily’s words with you:

“As an MCO alum and practicing optometrist, I feel that it is our responsibility to invest in tomorrow’s leaders. I had a great experience on campus at MCO. We had great instruction and professors who went above and beyond to ensure we were prepared to practice. I have a deep interest in the success of MCO, because I’m proud to be an alum. Besides supporting MCO, we also wanted to give back to our community. As a business owner in town, Mecosta County residents are my patients, and this scholarship is a way for me to say thank you to them. Finally, we chose the Ferris Futures Scholarship Challenge because our gift is being doubled by the University. The idea that we only have a five-year investment but that our investment will help future students forever was an opportunity we couldn’t resist.”

Ferris State alumni and supporters have created 108 new endowments through the Ferris Futures Scholarship Challenge. Like the Coles, your generosity will help students succeed in life, a chance they might not get elsewhere. Together, we are creating a new legacy of scholarship support for our students, both Now & Always. Please keep in touch with us – we love to hear from you. Learning of your accomplishments and successes is a powerful reminder of the transformative effect of a Ferris education.
