Dental hygienists provide comprehensive oral health care by cleaning teeth and by examining the oral cavity, head, and neck for signs of oral disease. They also educate patients on proper oral hygiene, provide nutritional counseling, expose and develop traditional and digital x-rays, apply fluoride/sealants, and help clients cease smoking. Aside from the usual settings in private practice dental offices, work settings may include schools, public health clinics, correctional institutions, and nursing homes.
