Center for Leadership, Activities and Career Services to Host ‘Leadership Week’ Activities

Ferris State UniversityFerris State University plans to help students identify key leadership skills during a weeklong event that kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 22. Leadership Week is hosted by the Center for Leadership, Activities and Career Services and runs through Saturday, March 1.

Students will travel to Grand Valley State University for the GVSU Leadership Summit, on Feb. 22. The Summit is designed for students to cultivate their leadership abilities and network with fellow student leaders. The cost is $15 per student for the first 50 to register and $30 for students to register thereafter. To register, contact the CLACS office at CLACS@ferris.edu or (231) 591-2140.

Monday, Feb. 24 is highlighted by a five-star campus event, "Character Does Matter," featuring keynote speaker Troy Tissue from the Travis Manion Foundation. The foundation's mission is to assist veterans and families of fallen heroes. Tissue will discuss the values and mindset of leaders. Through an inspiring narrative, Tissue asks students to consider the, "If not me, then who?" mindset to improve the community around them. Leadership Week includes a case-study competition that pushes students to identify leadership styles by working together. Student teams will solve a crisis following a particular leadership model. Submissions are due by Friday, Feb. 21. On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the case studies will be displayed during the Leadership Styles Workshop at 6 p.m. in IRC, Room 121. Students who place in the competition will be recognized at the annual Torchbearer Award Ceremony. “We want students to continuously reflect on and develop their leadership skills,” said Danielle Leisner, coordinator of Student Leadership and Activities.

Additional workshops hosted throughout the week will feature information on leadership styles, RSO advisor information and Hometown Recruiter sessions. The Mid-Michigan Walk for Warmth is being hosted on Saturday, March 1 at the University Recreation Center to wrap up the week of events. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk will commence at 10 a.m.
