Summer Internships: Lacilyn Soblaskey

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Lacilyn Soblaskey

She is: a senior in the College of Business’ Marketing program from Traverse City.

Her Internship: Throughout my internship, in the News Services office at Ferris State University, I have learned the fundamentals of press release writing, became proficient at social media management, and practiced my marketing research skills regularly.

I am a first-gen student with no sort of college-educated role model in my life. I have been quite self-sufficient in taking control of my education. However, my advisor, Donna Green, was extremely helpful in assisting with my internship search. She provided me with the contact information to the University Advancement and Marketing’s News Services team on campus. This is where I completed my internship.

Future Plans: I have fallen in love with digital marketing, from marketing research to content creation. However, the marketing industry is much more vast than just the digital aspect. I want to broaden my horizons and gain experience in other parts of marketing, such as sales and campaign creation.

Advice for Students Seeking Internships: The biggest piece of advice I can offer to students seeking or learning about internships is to start early! It is never too soon to begin scoping out internships. My biggest regret was only completing one internship my senior year. Although I would not trade my current internship experience for the world, I would have been better prepared for post-graduation life had I completed more than one internship at Ferris.

Campus Involvement as a Student: I am not part of any groups at Ferris. However, I have taken a liking to working out since coming to school at Ferris. I am so grateful for our available resources, like the outdoor track at Top Taggart Field, the Student Recreation Center, and the Racquet and Fitness Center. I would not have stepped out of my comfort zone and begun working out at the gym had it not been for the quality and comfortability of Ferris’ workout facilities.

Ferris Core Value Laci Relates to: The core value I relate to most is opportunity. I never pictured myself attending college, let alone graduating on time with a bachelor’s degree. Ferris State University provided me with academic advisors, financial advisors, and resources that provided me with the opportunity to afford to go to college. I was a TIP student during my time at Ferris. This program, combined with federal aid, scholarships and loans, gave me the financial stability to complete my education. Ferris State University allowed me to create lasting relationships and connections that will play to my advantage in my next chapter.
