Summer Internships: Bre Swift

Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:

Bre Swift

Bre Swift

She is: from St. Johns, Michigan, entering her final semester at Ferris, preparing to graduate in December with a Hospitality Management Degree.

Her Internship: is serving as the David L. Eisler Center Intern. “I had a previous internship as required for my Hospitality Management degree. This is a “level two” opportunity, where I manage the logistics of events, apply software to our organizational efforts and take up ‘behind the scenes’ aspects of event operations.”

Was Ferris Helpful in Arranging Your Internship? “I heard from a professor that the David L. Eisler Center was ready to establish this internship. I have worked with Associate Dean of Student Life Nicholas Campau, and along with the Eisler Center’s Shana Beisiegel, we developed what was appropriate for my situation.”

Bre’s Future Plans: “I can see taking my career pursuits in this direction, even starting here at Ferris, as it would be a great way to use and build my skills. My internship has shown me a great deal about the importance of this work for successfully presenting an event.”

Advice For Students Seeking Internships: “Networking is so very important. Everyone you meet knows someone; I think it is good to look at each contact as a potential boss. You should also be confident in asking questions that help you determine if that opportunity will fit your needs.”

Bre’s Previous Internship: “I was involved in set-up activities at Eagle Eye Golf Club in DeWitt. We would prepare facilities for conferences, and outings, where I would work both set-up and staffing the event.

Other Campus Activities: Bre is a member of the Hospitality Management Student Organization on campus, and early in her Ferris experience, Swift was on the executive board of a performing group, Vibrator Vibes.

Ferris Core Value Bre Relates to: “Opportunity. I feel I will take a variety of important experiences from my time at Ferris, as I was part of the student team at X Games Aspen earlier this year. I want to say that my professors and the HSMG staff made it all possible.”
