Ferris State University students gain valuable work experience through internships. Internships also can confirm or redirect career decision-making, provide marketability, develop people skills and enhance classroom learning. Many academic programs require one, but the experience is encouraged regardless to provide students with a better understanding of what will be expected of them in the workplace.
Many students are participating in myriad internships this summer. Meet:
Lauren Peterson
Lauren Peterson
She is: a Ferris alumna of the Bachelor of Social Work program from Elk Rapids. Lauren is pursuing a Master of Social Work degree with a placement at the Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center.
Her Internship and Making a Difference: “I am learning to work within a tight-knit team, work with diverse individuals, learn new techniques when working with clients, and so much more. I believe I am making a difference by helping bring encouragement into sessions with my clients.”
Did Ferris Help Arrange for your Internship? “My advisor assisted me in every way to find the right internship. We discussed my interests, and she connected me with places that best suited me. I never felt alone in finding an internship placement or in any changes that occurred at my placement.”
Future Plans: “I hope to continue to work with children and their families. Then maybe one day I would like to have my counseling practice.”
Previous Internship Experience: “When I was getting my Bachelor of Social Work through Ferris, I also needed an internship. I was placed at Traverse City High School.”
Advice for Students Seeking Internships: “Be 100 percent honest about your interests as it applies to your placement. After being placed, don’t be scared to ask questions because that’s how we learn.”
Ferris Core Values Lauren Relates to: “I find so many of them important. I strive for excellence in everything I do. I make sure I give everything I do 100 percent. I always want to learn more and ask questions, so I gain from my learning. I enjoy collaborating with my classmates and staff members at my internship. I seek the opportunity to learn more or engage in opportunities.”
