Learn about the rich culture, the political-economic history and context for social workers in El Salvador. Participate in tours, service learning opportunities, and hear personal testimony from survivors of El Salvador's civil war. Learn about international social work by meeting with social work practitioners and non-governmental agencies (NGO’s), community and neighborhood organizations.

  • SCWK 380: International Social Work (3 credits)

Estimated Cost of Study Abroad Experience:

  • Program cost: $1,300. Includes ground transportation, lodging, field trips and activities, meals, and insurance.
  • Airfare:  $750. Costs may vary by traveler.
  • Tuition: $392 per credit, undergraduate junior/senior rate.
  • Estimated Total Cost (with 3 credits): $3,226.00

Not included in estimated cost:

  • Passport
  • Required textbooks and supplies
  • Personal expenses, some meals

Tuition rate for freshman/sophomore participants is $382 per credit hour.

Program participants will reside in hotels and in guest houses with families.

12:00 PM - Arrive San Salvador, visit the Puerto La Libertad
4:00 PM - Arrive to the Oasis Guest House, introductions and orientation
6:00 PM - Dinner at the Oasis

Sunday May 22: 
7:00 AM - Breakfast in the Oasis
8:00 AM - Damian Alegria's personal testimony
9:30 AM - Leave for Jabali Coffee Cooperative, lunch at the Coop
4:00 PM - Leave to visit the Pasco El Carmen in Santa Tecla, have dinner there.

Monday May 23: 
7:30 AM - Breakfast in the Oasis, ready to leave at 8: 15 AM
8:30 PM - Radios Comunitarias in front of the Supreme Court
12:30 AM - Lunch
2:00 PM - Masculinidades with the Centro Bartolome de las Casas team

11 :00 AM - Leave for weekend in Santa Marta, lunch on the way
2:00 PM - Arrive to Radio Victoria and hike to Santa Marta
4:00 PM - Arrive to Aida's house and rest, share reading Aida's testimony
6:00 PM - Dinner and meet host families

8:00 AM - Meet with Aida, Historic Memory Walk & Talk with Walter Lainez

2:00 PM - Visit agricultural project with Maykel Pineda and Free School with university students

Monday May 30:

8:00 AM - Meet at Aida's house, leave for Radio Victoria
