CANISIUS UPENDS FERRIS STATE IN 2008-09 SEASON OPENER
Canisius overcome a one-goal deficit twice by scoring the game's final four goals to defeat the Ferris State men's ice hockey team, 5-2, Friday (Oct. 10) evening in the 2008-09 college hockey season opener for both teams at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
Ferris State took an early 1-0 lead as senior right wing Justin Lewandowski (Naperville, Ill.)scored just 3:38 into the contest. However, the Golden Griffins erased the deficit on Carl Hudson's power-play goal at 11:03. The Bulldogs would regain the lead with 4:16 left in the opening frame as senior left wing Blair Riley (Kamloops, Saskatchewan) picked up the puck from junior right wing Cody Chupp (Big Rapids) in the FSU zone and skated the length of the ice before going hard to the Canisius net and scoring past goaltender Andrew Loewen.
The first 20 minutes, which featured a combined four goals, ended up in a 2-2 tie as Josh Heidinger tallied on a Griffs' five-on-three power play with 1:44 remaining in the stanza.

Despite being outshot by a 52-24 margin, Canisius would break the deadlock in the second period with three unanswered goals in a contest which represented the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Cory Conacher accounted for two of the scores with a pair of short-handed markers at 4:01 and 17:24. Dave Kostuch also netted a lamplighter for the visitors at the 11:12 mark of the final frame.
The Bulldogs continued applying offensive pressure in the Griffs' zone by Loewen prevented any Bulldogs' scoring chances from converting by stopping all 21 third-period shots en route to a 50-save night and the game's second star. Sophomore Pat Nagle (Bloomfield) concluded the contest with 19 saves for Ferris State, which celebrated Student and Rink Appreciation Night with the completion of its 3.3 million dollar ice arena renovation project this summer.
With the loss, Ferris is now 9-18-3 all-time in season-opening encounters and 12-16-2 in home openers.
