FERRIS FOOTBALL NAMES 2008 TEAM AWARD RECIPIENTS
Senior Defensive Tackle Jake Visser Again Tabbed As Squad's MVP Honoree
Ferris State University senior defensive tackle Jake Visser (Coopersville) was recently honored as the Bulldogs' 2008 team Most Valuable Player Award recipient. The award winners were announced at the program's season-ending awards banquet last Sunday (Nov. 9) at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
In additon to being recognized as the squad's MVP for the second consecutive year, Visser also claimed the team's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman Award for the fourth-straight year. This past week, Visser received the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year honor after being the sole recipient of the honor in 2007.
The team's Most Valuable Offensive Lineman Award was given to sophomore offensive tackle Matt Wellman (Portland).
The Bulldog coaching staff presented the Most Valuable Offensive Skill Player honor to sophomore slot Tim Hogue (Dearborn/Inkster) while senior defensive back Terrell Heggins (Lansing/Everett) picked up team Most Valuable Defensive Skill Player honors and redshirt freshman receiver Damien Miller (Elsie/Ovid-Elsie) was the recipient of FSU's Special Teams Player of the Year Award.
Outstanding Offensive and Defensive Rookie laurels were earned by redshirt freshman quarterback Tom Schneider (Jerome/Addison) and junior defensive back C.J. Lee (Lockport, N.Y.), respectively. Meanwhile, junior defensive back Chad Wilson (Howell) claimed Most Improved Defensive Player kudos while senior offensive guard Alex DeKok (Valencia, Calif./Saugus) tallied the program's Most Improved Offensive Player Award.
The staff also recognized senior receiver Rahseem Jones-Salaam (Baldwin) on offense, senior defensive end Kyle Walker (Grand Haven) on defense and senior linebacker Rob Evenboer (Portage/Central) on special teams as this year's Coaches Award honorees. Bulldog Spirit Awards were given to senior linebackers Jordan Moore (Ada/Lowell) and Kevin Noe (Orleans/Belding).
Senior outside linebacker Jeff Hollandsworth (Livonia/Stevenson) and senior receiver Cole Meredith (Big Rapids) both received the Rich Currie EPEP (Every Player, Every Play) Award for the defensive and offensive units, respectively.
Freshman defensive lineman Justin Williams (Pontiac/Central) was this year's recipient of the Tomorrow's Team Defensive Player of the Year Award and the Bill and Lynne Scheible Scholarship Award for Tomorrow's Team Offensive Player of the Year Award went to freshman offensive lineman Trevor Smolinski (Battle Creek/Marshall).
Additionally, the Bulldogs recognized Visser, Moore and Meredith for their roles in serving as team captains for the 2008 season.
The Bulldogs registered their fifth winning season in the last six years with a 6-5 overall record this season. It represented the program's ninth winning campaign in 14 years under head coach Jeff Pierce and marks the 14th time in the last 20 years the Bulldogs have finished above .500 for the year. FSU was an even 5-5 in GLIAC action this campaign.
