The Ferris State University women's basketball squad has had some close games with Lake Superior State in recent memory and Saturday's (Feb. 21) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tilt between the two teams inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena was certainly no different.
The Bulldogs trailed by nine points only five minutes into the contest but came out on top by posting a 69-66 triumph over the Lakers in their regular-season home finale before a "Senior Day" crowd of 414 fans at Big Rapids.
Following the game, the Bulldogs honored seniors Teghan Thelen, Ashley Fleming, Caitlin Hutchison and Jenna Guay after their final home games at Wink Arena.
The senior quartet led the Bulldogs in the win over the Lakers, which enabled FSU to jump past LSSU and move into sole possession of sixth place in the GLIAC standings. Ferris improved to 11-13 overall and 9-11 in league play by winning its fifth-straight game this campaign.
Thelen tallied a team-high 21 points in her final home game and added both five rebounds and five assists. Meanwhile, Guay chipped in with 12 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists.
Fleming closed out the home portion of her career with a double-double effort as she had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hutchison added four points in the victory.
The performances from the seniors helped offset a 26-point effort by Lake Superior State's Jaclyn Armstrong, who also totaled 14 rebounds. Emily Joseph contributed 13 points and Alyssa VanderWal netted 12 boards in the losing cause for LSSU, which fell to 15-13 overall and 8-12 in the GLIAC.
Ferris shot 47% (28-60) from the floor and connected on four-of-11 (36.4%) three-pointers with nine-of-13 (69.2%) free throws. Meanwhile, the Lakers were 25-of-65 (38.5%) from the field and three-of-13 (23.1%) beyond the arc in addition to 13-of-18 (72.2%) at the free throw stripe.
The Lakers outrebounded FSU 41-36 and grabbed 17 offensive boards while FSU had 10 rebounds on the offensive end.
Ferris dished out 23 assists as Thelen, sophomore guard Chelsea Simonetti and freshman guard Kelsey DeNoyelles tallied five apiece. The Lakers totaled 10 assists and turned the ball over 14 times.
FSU compiled six steals and six blocks with the Lakers netting six thefts and four swats.
Ferris State hits the road for its final two regular-season contests next week. The Bulldogs visit Northwood on Thursday, Feb. 26, starting at 6 p.m. (EST). FSU then travels to Wayne State Saturday, Feb. 28, to wrap up the regular-season with tipoff set for 1 p.m. (EST).
The top eight teams at the end of the regular-season advance to the GLIAC Tournament and FSU currently sits in sixth with a one-game lead over three teams including LSSU, Northern Michigan and Findlay.
