The Ferris State University men's basketball squad completed a two-game road sweep in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a 86-80 victory over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon in MTU's Student Development Complex Gymnasium at Houghton, Mich.
Saturday's victory combined with Thursday's (Jan. 29) triumph at Northern Michigan marks only the second time the Bulldogs have swept the two Upper Peninsula foes on the same road trip in the last 20 years. FSU accomplished the feat while clinching a second-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Championship in 2004-05, but prior to that season had not done so since the 1988-89 campaign.
The Bulldogs scored the first eight points in the game and took a 40-33 halftime edge by shooting 56% for the initial period, including a eight-of-12 (.667) effort behind the three-point stripe.
FSU led throughout the second half and held a double-digit lead before the Huskies closed the gap to four with a run late in the game. Ferris was able to clinch the win at the free throw stripe where the Bulldogs connected on 20-of-30 (67%) for the day.
Sophomore forward/center Justin Keenan paced FSU with a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Darien Gay chipped in with 22 points and junior guard Austin Randel totaled 14 points.
The Huskies had four players in double-figures as Don Fowler totaled 17 points to lead Michigan Tech.
FSU shot 54% for the day from the field and nailed 10-of-17 (59%) three-pointers. MTU shot 41.4% (24-58) but was only five-of-21 (24%) beyond the arc.
Ferris State improved to 11-8 overall and 9-5 in GLIAC action with the triumph as the Bulldogs remain one game behind Lake Superior State and Grand Valley State atop the GLIAC North Division standings. MTU fell to 9-10 overall and 6-8 in league play.
The Bulldogs continue their four-game league road swing by visiting Hillsdale next Thursday (Feb. 5) with the game set for a 8 p.m. (EST) start in HC's Jesse Phillips Arena at Hillsdale, Mich.
