Ferris State officially opens practice for the 2008-09 basketball season Wednesday. Among the returnees this year are Justin Keenan (top) and Teghan Thelen (bottom) for the men's and women's programs, respectively.
The Ferris State University men's and women's basketball squads will both begin preparations for the 2008-09 campaign by holding their first official practices Wednesday (Oct. 15) afternoon and evening in FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldog men's basketball team, which is guided by seventh-year head coach Bill Sall, welcomes back eight letterwinners from last campaign. Meanwhile, 11th-year head coach Tracey Dorow of the FSU women's basketball team returns nine letterwinners this season. Five of the nine women's players and all eight men's returnees all started at least one contest a year ago.

The Ferris State women's basketball squad, which advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history two years ago, wrapped up the 2007-08 season with a 17-12 overall record and placed tied for third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division with a 11-7 league mark.

The men's basketball team posted a 10-19 overall record with nine freshmen in the program last campaign. Ferris previously advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament in both 2004-05 and 2005-06 after claiming back-to-back league titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05 under Sall's direction. FSU reached the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen in 2004-05.

The Bulldog men's basketball squad first hits the hardwood with an exhibition contest Thursday, Oct. 30, against Cornerstone with tipoff set for 5 p.m. (EST) at Jim Wink Arena. Both the Ferris men's and women's teams will then play exhibition games at home as part of a West Michigan doubleheader on Tuesday, Nov. 11. The women's team will host Hope College at 6 p.m. (EST) with the men taking on Calvin in the second game of the doubleheader at 8 p.m. (EST).

FSU's first official men's contest will be Saturday, Nov. 15, when the Bulldogs travel to Great Lakes Regional opponent Northern Kentucky for a 1 p.m. (EST) afternoon clash. The game will be the first official regular-season contest in NKU's new 10,000-seat state of the art Bank of Kentucky Center at Highland Heights, Ky. The Norse are ranked fourth nationally in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Poll.

The women's basketball team officially starts its season in the Kentucky Wesleyan Lady Panther Classic on Nov. 15-16 in Owensboro, Ky. FSU squares off against host Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday (Nov. 15) at 4:15 p.m. (EST) and will then take on Indianapolis Sunday (Nov. 16) in a 2 p.m. (EST) contest.

The Bulldog men will play a 27-game regular season schedule while the women's team has 26 official contests on its schedule. The two teams will open their 22-game league schedules at archrival Grand Valley State on Monday, Dec. 1, in Allendale, Mich.

The men's basketball squad presently has 16 players on its current preseason roster while the women's lineup features 13 players at this time.
