**INVITED
Dr. Glenn Appleby, Associate
Professor, **

**SPEAKER:** **Mathematics Dept., ****Santa Clara University****, ****California**

** **

**TITLE: ***What’s the
Point?: Maximal Structures in Mathematics.*

__ __

**ABSTRACT:**

*The ways that points are constructed in various sets
in mathematics (topological, algebraic varieties, real numbers) will be
discussed and compared. Surprisingly (or
perhaps not so surprisingly), many fundamental theorems in diverse areas of
mathematics share similar underlying constructions that revolve around this
central idea.*
