MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT, FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY

MATH COLLOQUIUM, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2006, 11:00 AM, STR#138

INVITED       Dr. Glenn Appleby, Associate Professor,

SPEAKER:     Mathematics Dept., Santa Clara University, California

TITLE:               What’s the Point?: Maximal Structures in Mathematics.

ABSTRACT:

The ways that points are constructed in various sets in mathematics (topological, algebraic varieties, real numbers) will be discussed and compared.  Surprisingly (or perhaps not so surprisingly), many fundamental theorems in diverse areas of mathematics share similar underlying constructions that revolve around this central idea.
