SPEAKER:     Dr. Edward Aboufadel,

Department of Mathematics, Grand Valley State University

TITLE:           Wavelets, Secret Messages, and Spam

Abstract:

For the past several years, there has been much excitement and creativity surrounding the subject of wavelets.  Much of this enthusiasm comes from known and potential applications.  For example, wavelets have found use in image processing, the restoration of recordings, seismology, and text-to-speech software.  For the past several years, the speaker has worked with undergraduates on research projects on wavelets and applications.  He will describe these projects, which include hiding messages in images, reading "CAPTCHAs", and finding airplanes in aerial photographs.
