Students Gain Network Opportunity at Michigan Association of Insurance Agents Annual Convention

March 3, 2017

Six College of Business (COB) students were able to attend the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA) annual convention. The MAIA convention brings together hundreds of Michigan independent insurance agents for educational sessions, an awards luncheon, networking, and an exhibition hall.

On Wednesday afternoon, the exhibit hall gave students a chance to network and talk with several insurance industry service providers and insurance carrier executives. The students even had an opportunity to meet Kurt Foley, a Ferris graduate who is now the CEO and President of Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Company.

There were several fascinating educational sessions. One session included keynote speaker, Jerome Mayne ideas on ethics. Mayne, who was convicted and served prison time for mail and wire fraud several years ago, told attendees his story and educated them on the major consequences of ethical lapses.  In another educational session, David Walker from the Hartland Insurance Agency described the proper—and improper—use of the ubiquitous certificate of insurance document. At the Tuesday luncheon, Patrick McPharlin (Director of Michigan’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services) addressed the entire convention and covered topics that included innovation in insurance and the future of insurance regulation.

Students who attended this event include: Faith Austin, Jamee Frei, Noah Gale, Melissa Klinger, Sarah Miller, and Cody Simons.
