Student Makes a Difference By Focusing On The Details
When determining future plans, focusing on both short and long term goals allows for students to make decisions effectively. Human Resource Management student Sabrina Heaton is doing just that at her internship with Challenge Manufacturing.
During her internship with Challenge, Heaton has learned in-depth the hiring process for new employees. This includes resume searches, setting up interviews, and interviewing itself. Once an individual is hired, Heaton assists in adding them to the Challenge system.
The College of Business provided the tools for Heaton in her internship search, however, she decided to challenge herself and find an internship using her own resources. By searching and networking with companies around the area she lived, she was able to find internship openings that best suited her interest.
Heaton advises students to not be afraid of applying to different companies that are outside of Ferris’s resources. When one connects with different companies or businesses personally, it can be surprising what internships may be available.
Although working for Challenge Manufacturing is her first experience applying what she learned at the College of Business, Heaton has created a positive working environment while experiencing all that her summer internship has to offer.
“I feel as if I am making a significant difference during my internship at Challenge Manufacturing,” said Heaton, “ Whether I am filing paperwork for someone or searching for potential candidates for open positions in the company. I believe that even the smallest tasks make for a world of help when everyone has multiple tasks to get done.”
Now that she has gained both knowledge and experience while working at Challenge Manufacturing, Heaton hopes it will support her in achieving her short term goal of interning in Sydney Australia through the internship program. Her long term professional goals include focus on the automotive industry, however, nothing is officially determined yet.
Connecting with Ferris’s core value of opportunity, Heaton has been able to take what she has learned in her first two years at Ferris and successfully apply it to her internship. Heaton encourages others to seek out opportunities both at Ferris as well as in the business world.
