Auto Show Internship Provides Immersion Experience

Public Relations student Jordan House was able to go behind the scenes of one of the biggest events in Detroit. Through networking with Max Muncey, the PR director for the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) and a close family friend, she secured a one-week intensive internship in Detroit.

House was at first apprehensive; she’d been warned of mental and physical exhaustion. The internship meant a week of 18-hour work days, constantly on her feet. The experience didn’t prove as daunting as she feared, in part because of the amazing things and people she saw.

Among her internship duties was creating and uploading content to a database that would assist the media with their stories. It gave them access to restricted images and press releases. She was also responsible for managing several social media accounts representing the NAIAS and taking photos and videos of events on the floor.

“Though I wasn’t directly writing press releases or creating a social media campaign for the NAIAS,” House says, “I was constantly running into tasks that were familiar because of what the PR program taught me.”

All of this was prep for the Charity Preview event, during which thousands of guests in black ties socialize and tour the show floor before it’s open to general public the following day. This event raised over $5 million to be donated to charities around the greater Detroit area.

House had already completed her required internship at the Grand Rapids Public Museum for one year and had a second internship at the Ferris State Office of International Education. Both of these internship allocated more time for her to apply what she learned from the Public Relations program. For this fast-paced, one-week internship she took what she learned and put it into action.

Overall, interning for the North American International Auto Show gave her insight into the professional world, as well as introducing her to others in the field.
