Professional Tennis Management

Curriculum

The Professional Tennis Management Program (PTM) is housed within the College of Business which means that not only is the student getting a Tennis Management degree, they are also earning a business degrees.  Approximately 45% of the overall study in the PTM program is in business, 30% in general studies, and 25% in courses related to tennis management. Completion of the program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in business with a choice of a marketing or resort management concentration with a tennis emphasis. All students must take and pass the United State Professional Tennis Association's (USPTA) certification exam and earn a P-2 level rating in order to graduate.

 

Business Courses (60 Credits)

The PTM curriculum contains a comprehensive business curriculum and PTM students enroll in the same courses as all business students such as:

  • management
  • marketing
  • accounting
  • sales
  • retail merchandising
  • computer information
  • law and other business related courses

 

Tennis Management Courses (16 Credits)

Professional Tennis Management courses cover all areas of the tennis industry. These courses are designed to provide the tools and education necessary for graduates to enter the top entry level positions in the industry. Courses cover topics such as racquet repair, clay court maintenance, beginning and advanced teaching technique, video analysis, event and club programming, web development, and so much more.

These courses are taught by Ferris PTM faculty, and supplemented by tennis industry experts that have visited campus such as:

(Expert in Sports Fitness and Movement)

General Education Courses(48 Credits) & Technology

The curriculum also includes general education requirements that help provide for a well-rounded education such as: English, mathematics, humanities and social sciences. The PTM program at Ferris State University is on the cutting edge of technology, utilizing computers, video analysis, and the web to enhance the learning experience.

USPTA Certification

The United States Professional Tennis Association is the country's largest and oldest trade association for tennis professionals. Certification as a USPTA professional provides the credentials necessary to obtain employment as a tennis professional.

Founded in 1927, the USPTA certifies, educates and provides professional services for its more than 12,000 members around the world. It is a non-profit organization with two goals: to raise the standard of the tennis profession, and promote tennis and tennis participation.

The certification test is given the senior year for PTM students and includes a proficiency evaluation, teaching and playing assessment, and written examination. Ferris students are fully prepared to pass the test on the first attempt.
