Featured Internship: Veronica Polniak
Location of Internship, brief job description, and any special recognitions:
My internship took place at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market, located at 435 Ionia Ave SW Grand Rapids, MI. During my time at the market I was involved in numerous projects. Upon hire, I started planning a major fundraising event for over 220 guests called, Market Masters. This ‘Iron-Chef’ style event competition took three months of organizing. I was involved in everything, big and small. My responsibilities included outlining a marketing plan, hiring caterers and videographers, organizing the chefs, creating an hour-by-hour event timeline, and so much more. In addition to living the life of an event planner, I organized and operated bi-weekly plant sales with the Greenhouse Manager. I also worked alongside chefs in the Teaching Kitchen during ‘Simmer Camp’, where I taught kids how to cook, garden, and develop other valuable skills.
During my time at the market, both part-time and full-time staff members were invited to a ‘Staff Appreciation Party’ where teammates were recognized for their contributions to the Downtown Market. I was presented with the “Team Player Award 2016” for supporting and encouraging my team, as well as successfully accomplishing goals.
How you related this internship to one of the FSU core values:
As a firm believer in on-the-job training and skill development, I follow FSU core value of learning. During my internship I actively participated in any learning opportunity offered to me and I continued to develop practical skills daily.
Campus Involvement, volunteer, something special about you:
I was never a cheerleader, but I carry the same enthusiasm as one! I try to radiate a good energy, and I think many people find that a very special quality in me.
I’ve always been eager for new opportunities and I’m keeping my options open for now. Currently, I am gaining management experience, in a full-time position, at Carver’s Fine Meats. Given the opportunity, I’d love to explore a career in Human Resources at a food-focused company.
Advice for other students:
My advice to other students is to be passionate about whatever you are doing. Show up to work or school with an eagerness to learn and share, enjoy your self, and always keep a positive attitude. If you’re not happy, move on.
