MIM Makes Music Its Business

It takes more than just musicians to put on a concert, produce and distribute a great recording, or get a new guitar into the hands of a player. Students join their passion for music and their desire for a career in the music and entertainment industry by enrolling in the Music Industry Management Program (MIM).

The MIM Program began in 1995 with 15 to 20 students. These students helped to shape the program and, under the direction of Coordinator and Professor Daniel Cronk, formed the Music Industry Management Association (MIMA). MIMA was to act as a hands-on lab extension of the program, simulating a full-scale model production company.

The MIM Program has grown to over 200 students, with an additional 60 incoming students arriving this fall semester. The program is the only one of its kind in the state of Michigan and aspires to be unique among programs across the nation. As a part of the College of Business, the program leads to a Business degree instead of a Performing Arts or Music degree. Two internships are also required for completion of the program, which is rare for similar programs.

The program also benefits from its professional affiliations, which happen to be two of the biggest associations within the music industry: the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) and the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM).

The Nation Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) is a non-profit organization that brings not only the manufacturers of music products, music technology, sound and lighting together but also fosters music creation among people of all ages. The organization hosts two trade shows a year, one in Anaheim, California, and the other in Nashville, Tennessee.

In July 2013, 30 students will travel to Nashville for the Summer NAMM Show. They will see 432 music product exhibitors within the industry and have the option to expand their knowledge by participating in NAMM University sessions. These sessions, coordinated by successful and innovative industry professionals, offer tips and tricks on various topics ranging from retail boot camp, managing social media, how to increase/improve business, finance, and how to sell to your toughest customers.

The MIM program can lead students to music industry careers in which they can make their passion their profession.
