Assistant Professor Becomes First Educator to Achieve New Certification
January 12, 2017
During the holiday break, College of Business assistant professors Gerald Emerick and Jim Furstenberg both became certified in different aspects of cyber security.
Furstenberg became a Certified Network Defender, and Emerick became the first educator in the nation to be a version 9 Certified Security Analyst (ECSA) through the International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council).
This certification means Ferris State University with be the first to offer the ECSAv9 experience to students as well as the public and helps keep the COB faculty, program, and students on the leading edge of cyber security defense.
The International Council of the EC-Council is a member-based organization widely known for offering the most challenging and recognized Cybersecurity certifications globally. This newly reformatted course provides a real-world, hands-on penetration testing experience and offers a globally accepted hacking and penetration testing course.
In recent years, the council has partnered with universities with cyber security programs to offer programs to offer part of its curriculum for professors to teach. After becoming certified instructors with the EC-Council, Emerick and Furstenburg were able to integrate the knowledge they learned from a conference or a training center and apply it to the existing classes in the program.
“What we expect from our students, we expect of ourselves.” Furstenberg said. “Our industry moves so fast, what may have been relevant two months ago is outdated. So we as instructors have to be on the edge and constantly integrated into those changes.”
The programs Emerick and Furstenburg teach helps build the next generation of professionals who will defend against cyber attacks. Already, many students who have gone through, or are finishing the program, are in internships or careers in the field, both men said. The students are in high demand.
