Services for Students

How to Use Our Counseling Services

Welcome to the Ferris State Counseling Center website.

Students who wish to see a counselor are asked to call or walk into the Personal Counseling Center at 210 Birkam Health Center Building (second floor) during regular office hours where you will be shown to will fill out intake documents on a computer.  After this paperwork is briefly reviewed, an appointment will be scheduled with a therapist as soon as an opening is available and/or as your particular need requires. Appointments generally last about an hour for one or two sessions up to several sessions. The therapist helps the student define the problem that he/she wishes to resolve and they then work together to develop goals and strategies to resolve those problems. Students seek help for a variety of concerns including:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Coping with personal feelings
  • Alcohol and other drug use/abuse
  • Self-esteem
  • Family issues
  • LGBTQ issues
  • Eating disorders
  • Sexual assault or other interpersonal violence
  • Self-harming behaviors

Office Hours: M-F 8 a.m.-noon/1-5 p.m.

No client information will be released on or off campus without informed written release of information forms signed by you, the student. This is consistent with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulation, Michigan Mental Health Code, and the ethics statements of the various professional organizations to which our staff belong.

There are some exceptions including those pertaining to health and safety of the student and/or others, danger to self or others, current child abuse, and court subpoenas. Your counselor will review all of this with you.

Groups and Workshops

While most of our counseling is individual or couples, there are a limited number of support groups, and educational workshops offered depending on need and interest. These services assist students in developing more awareness and knowledge about themselves and others. Contact the Personal Counseling Center for current groups and programs.

This group is for students who have run into difficulty related to alcohol and other drugs on or off campus. Most often this group involves individual referrals from the Office of Student Conduct. Often these difficulties include minors in possession, drinking in the residence halls, inappropriate use of alcohol and other drugs on campus, driving while impaired, drunk driving, drug possession, etc. This group meets Fall and Winter Semesters. Call the Personal Counseling Center (591-5968),  for more information.
