The AFE seeks to build an inclusive Ferris State University that is welcoming of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer employees and our allies through education and advocacy. The organization promotes speakers, exhibits, forums, and other educational events to increase understanding of LGBTQA issues.

Our activities are consistent with the University's definition of diversity, which includes sexual orientation and gender identity, and with the Diversity Plan's Strategic Goals which call upon the campus community "to create a University that is welcoming to diverse populations" and "to hire and retain a diverse workforce."

On July 8, 2009 the Ferris State University Board of Trustees approved Other Eligible Adult benefits to university employees. These benefits were made available to non-union, non-represented employees on January 1, 2010. On December 18, 2009 the Board approved that the university enter into agreements with collective bargaining units that request these benefits. An agreement was immediately signed with the Ferris Faculty Association (FFA) and an open enrollment period for faculty occurred in mid-January.

The AFE applauds these actions. They show Ferris State University's commitment to a vibrant and diverse workforce, and strengthen the University's relevance and competitiveness in the state and the global marketplace.

During the Fall 2009 semester, the AFE sponsored and AFE members participated in several important educational events that will contribute to building a more inclusive University. On October 5th, Dr. John Corvino, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Wayne State University, spoke on "What's Morally Wrong with Homosexuality." Throughout the month of October the Rankin Art Gallery displayed "Love Makes a Family", an exhibit including photographs and interview with families with LBGT members. The film "Seven Passages" and a discussion with Reverend Jim Lucas was presented on October 20th ; the film discusses the seven passages in the Bible that are frequently referenced in discussions of homosexuality. A DVD featuring Dr. Corvino, and the "Seven Passages" DVD are both available at the FLITE library.
