Scout Sparks

Student Leader

Scout Sparks

Scout Sparks is a hard-working student who embodies the core value “learning” in her everyday Ferris State University life. While working on campus as an admissions representative in the Timme Center for Students Services, Sparks is constantly learning new things and applying them to her academic success.

Sparks is a junior in Human Resources Management, with a Public Relations and Spanish minor. As she looks toward graduation in Spring 2017, Sparks decided to enhance her learning and leadership capabilities as she took on an executive board position as vice president of social affairs in the Ferris’ Public Relations Student Society of America chapter. It was her first e-board position at Ferris. Sparks, however, was confident that the new leadership role was a perfect opportunity to further her learning as she fully immersed herself in the Ferris experience.

Sparks overcame personal questions related to college careers and decisions. After her freshman year at Ferris, in the PR program, she transferred to Lansing Community College with plans to ultimately transfer to Michigan State University. However, Sparks realized that she missed Ferris and its social atmosphere. She decided that her best decision was to return to Ferris for the Spring 2015 semester. Sparks figured that she would learn the most through a PRSSA leadership role that she took on during Summer 2015.

As a new PRSSA e-board leader, Sparks plans to encourage learning for other organization members and to grow increasingly confident in her own professional skills. Although she did not attend Ferris in Fall 2014, Sparks did travel to Washington D.C., with several other PRSSA members, to attend the National PRSSA Conference. Listening to professional speakers, meeting various PRSSA chapter members from across the nation and visiting PR agencies, helped Sparks focus her learning experience and make the trip an unforgettable journey.

Sparks’ reunion with the Ferris PRSSA chapter has her excited about a strong finish to her undergraduate studies. This past summer, Sparks devoted considerable hours to work as a student orientation leader. In that capacity, she was able to help incoming students learn more about Ferris and to get their Bulldog journey off to a great start.

Learning is a major core value for Ferris and Sparks does her very best to set a positive example of why learning is so important.
