A variety of organizations and student groups will gather with Ferris State University faculty and staff the evening of Thursday, April 20 as the 17th annual Torchbearer Leadership and Service Award ceremony will be held in the University Center.

Center for Leadership, Activities and Career Services Director Angela Roman said while the center has specific honors for students who achieve excellence in their leadership efforts, such as Rising Star and Torchbearer awards, there are other presentations, with recipients determined by members of Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council Fraternities, which are also announced at the event.

“With over 220 registered student organizations, the annual volunteer efforts average 30,000 hours, and the story of these successes are told and Ferris State Universitycelebrated at the Torchbearer Leadership and Service Ceremony,” Roman said. “We hold an opening reception, beginning at 6 p.m., and a celebratory program that follows, which is our way of thanking students and recognizing their efforts publicly.”

Roman said the ceremony is a shining example of collaboration for a variety of university departments, who will see their nominees and award winners honored at the event.

“The Office of International Education, University Recreation’s Club Sports program, the Office of Multicultural Student Services and the Honors Program represent just a few of our collaborators,” Roman said. “A student who earns an award at this ceremony will have a valuable addition to their employment portfolio.”

Those registered student organizations that have presented outstanding achievement in campus participation and program offerings will be recognized with the Five Star Award. There will also be an RSO Advisor of the Year Award, selected from a field of nominees.

Roman said the Torchbearer Leadership and Service Award ceremony capsulizes a portion of the university vision statement by promoting “A stimulating, student-centered academic environment that fosters life-long engagement, leadership and citizenship.”
