An independent online publication offering rankings and reviews of colleges and their
programs has honored Ferris State University’s Bachelor of Science curriculum in Human
Resource Management, calling it one of the best online HR programs in the country.
Ferris is ranked 12th among the 40 schools listed in collegechoice.net’s rankings for 2016.
Professor Beverly DeMarr is program coordinator for Human Resource Management, and she said their online students are required to complete the same assignments that Management students are given in on-campus instruction. She said that the students in her online classes come from a variety of backgrounds.
“Some are seeking to change careers after a number of years in the workforce, others are working at entry level jobs and need the academic credentials to move into a supervisory or management position,” DeMarr said. “Some have work schedules that vary, week to week, that make it impossible to attend traditional classes. While assignments are due each week, they complete the work on their time schedule.”
DeMarr said offering Management courses online also allows traditional students to continue with their coursework while they are away on internship. Those opportunities are almost exclusively completed away from Ferris’ main campus in Big Rapids, Mich., at companies affiliated with the university.
Collegechoice.net’s review of the university’s program cites accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, as well as The Higher Learning Commission as factors used in the determination of this ranking. The site describes Ferris’ Human Resources Management curriculum as “a degree crafted for students interested in business to strengthen their understanding of HR, and how it can affect a business organization.”
