Ferris Alumnus Wyckoff to Return to Speak About Evolving Social Media

Luke WyckoffFerris State University’s American Marketing Association student chapter is hosting alumnus and social media specialist Luke Wyckoff on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in Williams Auditorium. Wyckoff, president of Denver-based Social Media Energy, will speak about the importance of staying current with technology as well as understanding what not to do in social media and how social media can be beneficial.

A native of Sheridan, Mich., Wyckoff will also present different perspectives related to social media, what students should do, what businesses are doing to reach customers and what people should be aware of in the future with social media technology.

“Social Media has given us the opportunity to communicate instantly with the world. What many people have considered to be just a casual game has become a place to do business, find jobs and promote your personal brand,” said Sam Dorland, a senior in Marketing from Torch Lake, Mich. and AMA’s vice president of Professional Development. “No matter what your major is or what your interests are, you can use social media to help you get where you want to be.”

Dorland believes Wyckoff’s presentation can provide valuable insight for students.

“Chances are that no matter what you plan to do in your career or personal life you will have some contact with social media,” he said. “Luke Wyckoff’s expertise and experience owning a social media firm will provide valuable insight into something that many people may have never taken seriously.”

At Ferris, Wyckoff co-founded the rugby club team, was co-captain for two years of the university’s national championship debate team and photographed events on campus. He was also involved in Greek life, serving as recruitment director for the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and as president of the Interfraternity Council.

AMA is a campus five-star organization who has brought numerous beneficial speakers to Ferris’ campus. A previous speaker, Michael Ayalon, spoke last year on the use of social media.

“Luke has been a huge AMA supporter and a very avid Ferris supporter and alumni,” Dorland said. “He is a great keynote speaker and has been very successful in business, currently presiding over his firm, Social Media Energy. Luke has the charisma and knowledge to give Ferris a really awesome Five Star event.”
