Ferris to Host Mother/Daughter Technology Engineering Aptitude Event

Ferris State UniversityFerris State University is hosting the “Mother/Daughter Technology Engineering Aptitude” event on Saturday, Nov. 8 in Granger Center on the Big Rapids campus. The event is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Featured in the event is Celeste Baine, a biomedical engineer and author of more than 20 books. Baine will discuss her experiences as she demonstrates a range of opportunities available to young women interested in STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Attendees will have opportunities to put their talents to work in a creative and hands-on way throughout the day.

The event is geared toward girls from grades 8 through 11 who are interested in STEM careers or art.

Girls are encouraged to sign up with their mothers or adult female caretaker. Spaces are limited to the first 40 mother/daughter teams who sign up. Activities are designed to expose girls to opportunities in STEM fields through hands-on lab activities and assistance from current female CET students who will participate in the event and serve as role models to the young girls.

The event includes lab materials, lunch, snacks, T-shirts and more. Participants will attend a special seminar to learn about opportunities for women in STEM and related CET programs, tour campus and engage in a presentation about the college preparation process.

Some transportation scholarships are available for people interested in attending.

Registration is required to attend this event.

The College of Engineering Technology is collaborating with Academic Affairs, Admissions and K-12 partners to host the Saturday event.

The event was made possible, in part, through the Faculty and Staff Diversity Mini-Grant Program through the Diversity and Inclusion Office. To learn more about the program, visit here.
