Dump and Run Encourages Ferris Students and Community to Collaborate to Help People

Dump and RunThe eighth annual Dump and Run, an event that offers Ferris State University students and community members opportunities to donate items to those in need, begins Monday, May 5 and continues through Friday, May 9.

Receptacles will be placed in all on-campus student housing locations and at one off-campus location, Venlo Place. These receptacles will be used to collect gently-used clothing, shoes, bedding, cleaning supplies, school supplies and non-perishable food. Items will continue to be collected through Wednesday, May 14 at Ferris’ East Campus Suites and at Venlo Place.

Dump and Run is a yearly outreach effort orchestrated by the Immanuel Lutheran Church and Ferris for the Big Rapids community. Students who live off campus and community members can bring donations to Immanuel Lutheran Church at 726 Fuller Ave. in Big Rapids.

“We take the donated items and give them to organizations that distribute them to individuals who want, need and appreciate them,” said event chairperson Marianne Wolken. “These items would likely end up in dumpsters otherwise.”

Organizations that receive donations include the Salvation Army, Women’s Information Service, Morley-Stanwood American Legion Food Pantry, St. Vincent de Paul, The Lord’s Table, Project Starburst, Angels of Action, Our Brother’s Keeper, Manna Pantry, Riverview Elementary, Brookside Elementary, New 2 You, Habitat for Humanity and the Animal Rescue Coalition.

Volunteers are needed to sort the donations at the church and to pick up the items at receptacle locations each day of the event.
