Byron Williams, president of Student Government, is making one more big push to sign up student volunteers for The Big Event, scheduled for Saturday, April 13.
Williams, and the rest of The Big Event organizing team, have set an ambitious goal to sign up 2,000 Ferris students for this year’s volunteer service project in the Big Rapids community.
“Our goal of 2,000 student volunteers might be massive, but I know we can reach it,” he said. “It doesn’t help that this is the busiest time of year for students. We recognize this and try our best to make students aware of The Big Event and the opportunity they have to participate.”
The Big Event is an opportunity for Ferris students, faculty and staff to give back to the Big Rapids community that so many of them call home. In 2012, more than 1,800 Ferris students performed small service projects at about 290 homes in the area.
“What student doesn’t want a free T-shirt and what student doesn’t need volunteer hours?” asked Williams, a senior from Pontiac majoring in Public Relations. “We believe in the students here at Ferris and know that they are looking for these opportunities to give back. We just need to reach out to them so they are aware.”
Students interested in participating in The Big Event are asked to register beforehand. This can be done by printing off an application at http://ferris.orgsync.com/org/fsustudentgovernment/forms. The forms are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 27.
