Ferris State University students and Big Rapids community members will have the opportunity to view various works of art during upcoming exhibits at the Rankin Art Gallery.
“These exhibits are important, because very few places display art in Big Rapids,” said gallery assistant Diane Cleland, who noted admission is free.
The gallery opens its winter season on Monday, Jan. 14 with “Gray Areas; Doubts,” a solo exhibition by Ferris’ Kendall College of Art and Design alumna Megan Klco. Klco, who earned a master’s degree in fine arts in December, created the exhibit of large oil paintings for her thesis exhibition.
Klco is the inaugural winner of the Excellence in Art Purchase Award, an art competition that recognizes the strength of MFA student artwork. The award was instituted by Ferris, Kendall and the Rankin Art Gallery in cooperation with the Humanities Department and the College of Arts and Sciences. The university purchases the winning piece for display on the Big Rapids campus, and the artist also is offered a solo exhibition at the gallery.
Klco won for her oil on canvas “Point of Dissolution.” (View Klco’s artist statement and the work here: www.ferris.edu/gallery/images/klco-artist-statementweb.pdf).
Klco’s exhibit runs through Tuesday, Jan. 29; an artist reception is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16. Learn more about Klco, and view her work here: http://klco.wordpress.com/.
Also planned at the gallery in January is the sixth annual Honors Program Art Exhibit from Tuesday, Jan. 29 to Thursday, Jan. 31. The works by Ferris Honors students will include a variety of mediums.
“Some students use art as an outlet, and we have many creative people in the Honors program,” Cleland said. “The artwork can be anything; the majority of the works are paintings, however.”
Two works will be chosen as a judge’s favorite and a crowd favorite during a Wednesday, Jan. 30 reception. The winning students will be awarded $100 or $50 gift certificates from a Big Rapids business of their choosing.
In February, photography by Big Rapids native John Batdorff will be on display in the gallery. The Friday, Feb. 1 through Thursday, Feb. 28 exhibit will feature Batdorff’s landscape and travel photography. View his portfolio here: http://portfolio.johnbatdorff.com/.
The gallery’s winter schedule also will include the Ferris State Architecture Student Exhibit in April.
Admission to the gallery, located in the Rankin Student Activities Center above the bookstore, is free and open to the public. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
