Walk for Life at Ferris to Raise Awareness about Suicide Prevention

Ferris State University faculty, staff and students, and Big Rapids-area residents can raise awareness about suicide and ways to prevent it by participating in the inaugural Walk for Life on Saturday, March 2.

The two-hour walk, sponsored by Ferris’ chapter of the Lambda Alpha Epsilon criminal justice fraternity, will be held in the multipurpose room at Ewigleben Sports Complex on campus. Check-in will begin at 12:30 p.m.; there is no early registration. The walk will begin at 1 p.m.

“Students should participate, because it’s an event that will have an effect, more than you would think,” said Shannon Fick, a sophomore from Midland majoring in Criminal Justice.

Walkers can stop at different stations to learn more about suicide, how to prevent it and read a variety of testimonials from those who have dealt with suicide. They also will have the opportunity to write an inspirational message, sign their name or create a drawing on large sheets of paper in the middle of the walking track.

Participation for the event is free. Walk for Life is designed only to raise awareness. Anyone is welcome to participate.

Participants can fill out a survey before or after the event that will be entered into a drawing for three $10 gift cards to Buffalo Wild Wings in Big Rapids.
