Ferris State University faculty will gear up for the academic year with an opportunity to get “At the Core” of the university’s core values during Welcome Back Week.
New and returning faculty will be on campus Monday, Aug. 19 for the kickoff to Welcome Back Week, hosted by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. The week-long event precedes the start of the fall semester on Monday, Aug. 26.
“What makes Welcome Back Week compelling is the chance to see colleagues in a different light,” said FCTL director Todd Stanislav.
The theme, “At the Core,” is the focus of Monday’s afternoon event in Williams Auditorium and will feature stories shared by faculty and staff members that address Ferris’ six core values of Collaboration, Diversity, Ethical Community, Excellence, Learning and Opportunity. Speakers will utilize the Storycorps model, a national storytelling enterprise, Stanislav said.
Speakers include Center for Latin@ Studies director Tony Baker and associate director Jessica Cruz, who will relate personal stories to the core value of Opportunity; and Jordan Fenton, an assistant professor of Art History at Ferris’ Kendall College of Art and Design, who will address Diversity. Provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Fritz Erickson will follow the afternoon’s speakers with a “big picture” presentation and facilitate a Question-and-Answer session with attendees, Stanislav said.
The remainder of the week includes department workshops and college meetings.
“We try to find new and interesting ways to give faculty the opportunity to reconnect with each other and the institution,” Stanislav said of Welcome Back Week.
New faculty members are on campus this week for orientation, which includes opportunities to learn more about the university’s history and traditions, build professional and personal relationships, and get the tools and resources “to start strong in the classroom,” Stanislav said.
