Cast of "The Best Man"
The Ferris State University Theatre Department will present “The Best Man,” a play about power, ambition, political secrets, ruthlessness and the race for the presidency on Thursday, April 11 through Sunday, April 14 in Williams Auditorium.
The production will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
“Although the play is not a comedy, it is well-written and should be entertaining,” said Katherine LaPietra, coordinator of Ferris’ Theatre program. “Students should still be able to identify with some of the characters while also being glad they aren’t like others. Also, several students may also be able to receive extra credit for attending.”
“The Best Man” is a Tony-nominated play by American playwright Gore Vidal about two presidential candidates seeking their party’s nomination: Secretary William Russell and Senator Joseph Cantwell. When Cantwell threatens to smear Russell’s reputation with a rumor about his mental health, Russell faces a tough decision. Will he unleash an equally devastating smear on Cantwell to win the presidential ticket or keep his moral integrity intact even if it means losing the race? As it turns out, campaigning is about honesty and morals and being true to oneself, sometimes at great cost to a dream.
Playing William Russell will be Tyler Griffith, a junior majoring in Forensic Biology. Freshman Isaac Wilson, a Music Industry Management major, will play Joseph Cantwell.
