Social action organization “Exodus Cry” will bring its mission to end modern-day slavery and human trafficking to Ferris State University on Monday, Sept. 10.
The group’s appearance at 8 p.m. in Science Building Room 102 will include a presentation and time for questions followed by its award-winning documentary on the global sex industry, “Nefarious: Merchant of Souls.”
Exodus Cry was founded in February 2007 after Benjamin Nolot led a prayer meeting for victims of human trafficking. The following day, one of the largest human trafficking busts in history occurred, involving 2,400 arrests in 77 countries, according to the organization’s website: http://exoduscry.com/.
Since then, Exodus Cry has evolved into an international organization based in Grandview, Mo., that is committed to abolishing modern-day slavery through prayer, awareness and reform, and assists victims through non-violent rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
“Most of the time, we associate human trafficking with places outside of the United States, but the reality is that it exists in our country,” said Jeff Gibson, president of the Sociology-Anthropology Student Organization at Ferris. “Michigan is a high-traffic area for this crime due to the ease of crossing the Canadian border, so this is a problem locally as well.
“Slavery is still a problem that needs to be dealt with,” Gibson continued. “This event will give students the opportunity to get involved in ending human trafficking.”
The documentary, directed and produced by Nolot and released May 1, 2012, is a journey of exploration through 19 countries on four continents that captures the horrors of the worldwide commercial sex industry and offers hope for its abolishment.
