Robert and Judith Scranton Named Homecoming Grand Marshals

Robert and Judith ScrantonAs Ferris State University celebrates Homecoming 2011 this fall, it is proud to welcome back and recognize some of its most distinguished alumni.

Each year, Ferris selects individuals who have contributed to the university as students and alumni to serve as homecoming grand marshals. This year, the university has announced its selection of Robert and Judith Scranton, of Brighton, as grand marshals for homecoming, which commenced on Monday, Oct. 11 and runs through Saturday, Oct. 15.

“I am honored that I have been chosen to represent the alumni of Ferris for the 2011 homecoming parade by being named grand marshal,” Robert said. “Judith and I are privileged to serve in this capacity. Ferris feels like home to me. It was my home when I attended Ferris Institute from 1959 to 1963 and when I graduated from Ferris State College in 1964. I was involved in homecomings during those years, and it was a very strong part of college life for me.”

Robert is a 1964 alumnus of Ferris’ College of Allied Health Sciences and a recipient of the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2011. He served for many years as director of the Division of Community Health in the Michigan Department of Community Health prior to his 2002 retirement. He also served on the Ferris Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2003 to 2009.

Judith served as a long-term care administrator before she became Livingston County commissioner. She was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1996.

“Bob’s exceptional career in public service, coupled with the many ways he and his wife, Judie, have personally given back their time, talents, treasure and influence to advance Ferris State University over the years, truly embodied the type of character we felt should be recognized this year in conjunction with our theme, Toon In To Homecoming,” said Jeremy Mishler, director of Alumni Relations and Advancement Operations.

In 2002, as part of their adoration for Ferris, the Scrantons established the Robert K. and Judith L. Scranton and Family Scholarship Endowment Fund through The Ferris Foundation. The scholarship endowment provides financial assistance to students who participate on the varsity football team or varsity men’s or women’s track and field teams at Ferris.

“Bob and Judie’s life-long relationship with Ferris is undeniable and their love for the Bulldogs is unconditional – a feeling and perspective we know is shared by all of the alumni and families who participate with homecoming,” Mishler said.

Mishler noted that the Scrantons are known for their generosity and hospitality to help facilitate university activities, including hosting the 2004 Hometown Tour in their home. The Scrantons plan to host the Ferris men’s basketball team at their Brighton home between the Bulldogs’ shoot-around and game on Nov. 11 against the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

“Even though I have been retired from public service, I remain supportive and active in the Ferris family,” Robert said. “We are all lucky to be a part of such a storied tradition and a fine institution of higher learning.”
