Four Students Earn Honors During Speech Competition

pictureBIG RAPIDS – The winners of the 22nd Annual Ferris State University Communication Association Spring Campus-wide Speech Contest were recently awarded their cash prizes. The competition, which was open to all registered students, is sponsored by the Department of Humanities and the Ferris Chapter of the National Communication Association Student Clubs.

Students presented six- to eight-minute speeches on contemporary issues in Informative and Persuasive divisions. From more than 20 finalists, the top four speakers were:

  • Informative Speaking – First place and $75 was awarded to Sam Callen of Ravenna; Second Place and $25 was awarded to Cory Kowalski of Lowell.
  • Persuasive Speaking – First place and $75 was awarded to Leah McLean of Ann Arbor; Second place and $25 was awarded to Ashley Peterson of Oxford.

Peterson recently graduated from Ferris with honors. McLean, Callen and Kowalski are currently members of Ferris’ traveling forensics (individual speaking events) team coached by Ferris professor Dr. Sandra Alspach. They recently represented Ferris at the Pi Kappa Delta national forensics competition in Shreveport, La.
