Two students each will receive $2,000 per year through this scholarship. This award will provide recipients with funds to use for tuition, books, fees or other academic expenses.

Criteria for applicants of the J.E. Johnson Annual Skilled Trades Scholarship includes being a part- or full-time student majoring in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration programs; Mechanical Design or the Welding Engineering programs and having a minimum 2.5 GPA. The recipient also must be a native of the Tri-City region, which encompasses the cities of Saginaw, Bay City and Midland.
“This scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for our students. We look forward to a long-term friendship with J.E. Johnson,” said Karen Lerew, advancement officer for Ferris’ College of Engineering Technology.
J.E. Johnson, Inc. provides design, fabrication, installation and service of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, piping and mechanical systems to the commercial, industrial and institutional markets.
The reputation of Ferris’ College of Engineering Technology attracted Johnson’s attention. Housing programs such as HVACR, Welding Engineering and Mechanical Design programs, the College of Engineering Technology is one of the few mid-Michigan universities dedicating degrees to a number of skilled trades, Johnson said.
“This scholarship will provide funding for students interested in the broad spectrum of skilled trades. Often times, those interested in pursuing the skilled trades do not have the necessary funding to get formal training in this area, and we hope this scholarship will help offset some of these costs and give more opportunities to students,” he added. “J.E. Johnson, Inc. hopes to benefit in the future with a more talented local pool of prospective employees.”
